Mrs Dwyer says Hi 24/5/20

Date: 24th May 2020 @ 4:20pm

Hello Class One

This weekend is the start of our week off school but it’s just the same as every other day and weekend at home in lockdown.

I was supposed to be going on a camping holiday in Wales with my family but it had to be cancelled. I do keep thinking that maybe I should put up my tent in the garden, but I much prefer the warmth and comfort of my house.

Yesterday I had to take one of my cats to the vet. He had a sore paw and was limping and hopping about since Tuesday. The vet said he had been bitten by another cat (probably his brother) and the cut got infected. He cut out the infection and injected him with some medicine to make him feel better.  Today he is walking much better although he is sulking with me because he didn’t like me putting him in a cage and taking him out in the car.

My trip to the vet with my cat Leo reminded me of the Mog story ‘Mog and the V.E.T.’ Here is a link to the story. I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Here are photos of my two cats Pumpkin and Leo, and Leo feeling sorry for himself with a sore back paw.

Happy Birthday this week to Bobby on Monday and George (class 2) today!

Take care everyone. Keep busy and have fun.

Hello Class One

Date: 10th May 2020 @ 3:51pm

Hello Class One

How are you all? I hope you are all well and you are enjoying your time at home. This long weekend started off on Friday with some lovely weather, did any of you take part in any VE day celebrations? I know that some families had tea parties in their garden. We enjoyed the sunny weather by getting the paddling pool out and having afternoon tea.

It have still been receiving emails from children sharing photographs of all of the lovely things that they have been doing at home. It is so nice to see you all, even if it is only through a picture at the moment. I will continue to add these to our class page on the website (look for the ‘photos from home’ link at the top) so that you are able to see a little bit of each other.

I have been keeping busy at home. Sometimes I do actually forget what I have been doing though and I also often forget what day it is! I have sometimes found that each day is similar to the one before but I do try to make it a little bit more exciting and keep finding new things for us to do. I bought a new bike so we have started to go on lots of family bike rides. At the start of the year, Aidan wasn’t very confident riding his bike on the road but after lots of practise he is now loving going on longer rides, we managed to ride 9 miles on Friday. The roads have been quieter which has really helped to build his confidence.

Two years ago, this July, we got two baby chicks, Daisy and Peach. Those baby chicks are now fully grown hens and they live at the end of our garden. They have a hen house for sleeping in and laying eggs in and they also have a very big outdoor space to explore during the day. We keep them fenced off at the back so that they don’t come and eat all of our plants, the fence also keeps our dog away from them. I’m sure he would try and play with them all of the time if he could get close enough! Today their hen house was cleaned out so we let them run free around the whole garden. I think they were very happy.

Did you manage to have a look at the VLOG I posted with an art task for you to complete? That was my first ever VLOG, I am learning how to do new things all of the time. Keep checking out our class web page, we will post new tasks for you to try each week.

It is Elliott's birthday this week, all of the staff in Class One wish him a very happy day.

I would love to hear how you are all getting on, if you would like to send me a message to say hello or to let me know what you have been doing to keep yourself busy, then please feel free to email me on

I look forward to hearing from you and I hope to see you all soon.

Just Keep Reading

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 4:01pm

Hi Class One

I hope you are ok.  This is our 6th week off school.  I have said to my children that if this was our big summer holiday before we change classes, we’d be getting ready to go back now.

It feels very strange to be off school and not know when we will go back.

Have you been reading?

I love reading but don’t usually find time to do it, so I have been enjoying reading books that I’ve had stacked up in a cupboard.

I can really recommend for you a free eBook library on www.oxfordowl.co.uk

An adult will have to register for free and then you can access lots of books that you can read on a tablet, computer or phone.

Please go on and have a look.  You can read yourself and there is sound so it will read to you. Plus there are little games to play in each book.

See if you can find books that we have read in guided reading, books that you’ve had as home readers and lots of familiar characters.

You could write in your reading diary, all the books that you read.

Enjoy and let me know how you get on.

Stay safe and keep reading

Hello again from Miss Melville

Hello Class One

How are you all? I hope you are all well and have enjoyed your time at home over Easter. Did the Easter bunny visit your house? On Easter Sunday, we woke up to lots of eggs hidden in our back garden and we had lots of fun finding (and eating) them. It has been so lovely to receive emails and to see all of the photographs of things that some of you are doing at home. You have been busy! Some photographs have been added to the school website gallery for you all to see. I have sent out email replies but apparently some have gone to your parent’s junk folder so you may need to check in there for them.

Have you seen that Mr Mawson in Class 9 has set a couple of active challenges for you all?  The first challenge was to see how many bunny hop squats you could complete in 30 seconds. Well this certainly looks easier than it is. I had a go and managed 23 in total but my legs were a little bit achy for a couple of days afterwards. Have a look at his video for the second challenge and see if you can complete it.

Also keep an eye on our school website and see if you can find the staff video of what we have been up to at home. Can you see any familiar faces?

I have been keeping busy at home by trying some baking. Last week we made flapjacks and an iced sponge cake with sprinkles, this reminded me of dinners from my school days many years ago. They were both delicious and disappeared very quickly in my house with my greedy boys, I am sure we will be baking them again soon.

We have also enjoyed doing some artwork, Aidan painted a rainbow for our front window and Alistair painted a sunshine. There are lots of lovely pictures on display in our local area and we like looking at them when we go out for our daily walk. That is Finns favourite part of the day, he loves walking across the fields and chasing a ball.  We have been very lucky to have such lovely weather at the moment and I hope you have all managed to get outside at some point to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.

I would love to hear how you are all getting on, if you would like to send me a message to say hello or to let me know what you have been doing to keep yourself busy, then please feel free to email me on

Start of Summer term

Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 10:08pm

Hi Class One

I hope you all had a lovely Easter.

Tomorrow should be back to school after the Easter Holidays.  We would have been talking about all the places you had been to and all the exciting things you had done.

I know where you’ve all been – AT HOME. Same as me, but I’d love to hear about what you have been doing to keep yourself busy.

I have been mostly enjoying my garden in the sunshine – exercising, reading and gardening.

I have also watched 3 really good films – Trolls World Tour, Doctor Dolittle and Dumbo.  I wonder if you have seen them?  You could write about something you have watched.

I have a little challenge for you.  In maths, we were learning about 2D shapes.  I would like you to write down the shape names:

Square

Circle

Rectangle

Triangle

Describe each shape (how many sides? Straight or curved? How many corners?)

Then search around your house, inside and outside, for things that are those shapes.  Draw them and have a go at writing the words.

You could do a page for each shape.

Have a good day

Rainbow report

Date: 6th Apr 2020 @ 2:55pm

Hi Class One

I hope you are all ok.  This week should have been the first of our 2 weeks off for the Easter Holidays – not our 3rd week off.

It seems that everyone is being very creative with rainbows.

Here are 2 of our friends showing off their fabulous work.

We’ll have to get thinking about Easter Activities this week.

If we were in school, I would be telling you about what happened to Jesus when he came out of the desert. It’s the reason that we celebrate Easter.  You can find ‘The Easter Story’ in a short cartoon version on you tube.

Have a lovely week and stay safe everyone.

Hello from Miss Melville

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 9:22pm

Hello Class One

I hope you and your family are all well and staying safe during this time.

It feels like it has been a long time since we have all seen each other but hopefully it won’t be too long until we are all back together again in our classroom.

I do hope that you are finding lots of things to do to keep busy. My days have been very busy. As you know, I have two boys, Alistair and Aidan. They are also off school so I am trying to help them carry on learning a little at home. Sometimes they listen very well and complete all of their tasks but on other days, they don’t listen, they don’t want to work and they are not the best behaved students! We have found that our happiest days have been those that have included a little bit of work followed by artwork, playing in the garden, going for a walk, playing board games and watching some TV (they love Horrible Histories and You v’s Wild with Bear Grylls). Alistair is trying to teach me how to play chess and Aidan is teaching me how to do a somersault on our trampoline. I’m not very good at either at the moment, but I will keep trying to get better.

Let’s not forget about the other little boy in our household. Do you remember me talking about our puppy Finn? He is on my laptop screensaver. Finn is getting bigger, he is 9 months old and is absolutely loving all of the attention and fuss he is getting now that we are spending lots more time at home. We go out each day for a nice long walk to get some fresh air. We are very lucky as we live close to some fields so there is a lot of space for us all to run around.

I would love to hear how you are all getting on, if you would like to send me a message to say hello or to let me know what you have been doing to keep yourself busy, then please feel free to email me on

Keep Practising Phonics

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 7:30pm

Hi Class One

I hope you can all remember the phase 3 sounds we learned in phonics.  Have a look at them and impress your family.

qu     sh     ch     th     ai      ee

oo     oa     ar     or     igh    ur

ow     oi      ear    er     air    ure

Do you remember the ‘Obb and Bob’ game that we played in class?

Well you can play it at home. Go to

 https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/

It’s called ‘Picnic on Pluto’ under the title ‘popular resources’

Choose 'phase 3' and pick a different sound each time you play.

You could write down all the sounds you’ve had a go at and maybe some real and nonsense words with each sound.

As a challenge, have a go at some of the phase 5 sounds which we have started to learn.

Also have a go at some of the other games.

I hope you enjoy them.

Have fun

End of week 1 school closure

Date: 29th Mar 2020 @ 4:58pm

Hi Class 1

You've now had a full week off school and I hope you have found lots of things to do to keep you busy.

I have started each day with my children doing Joe Wicks PE lesson on youtube. We had sore muscles and were glad of the weekend to have a rest.  Have you had a go at this too?

We have also been listening everyday to a David Walliams audio story www.worldofdavidwalliams.com. They have disgusting and rude parts that I know you'll all find really funny.

The weather has been warm and sunny this week so we've spent lots of time outside, in the back garden and on a daily walk.  Poppy has a trampoline and Ethan has football goals, just like I know lots of you have.

It was Tom's birthday in class 2 last week and next week it is Emily's and Ruby's Birthdays. Happy Birthday! It was my Poppy's 9th Birthday on Wednesday.  It wasn't quite the day she planned but she still had a lovely time.  When we go back to school, we will celebrate for all the children who had a birthday while we were off.

While I've been out walking I have noticed lots of windows with rainbows so we made some by painting paper plates.  Have you made one?

If you would like to send me a quick message to say 'Hi' or tell me what you've been up to, I'd love to hear from you.  You can email me  - jenny.dwyer@kirkbyce.co.uk

Stay home, stay safe, stay busy.
