Look at the picture carefully.

Role Play the first three tasks then answer the questions in your workbook.

Role Play -   Imagine that you have just walked into your kitchen to find this.

  • Role play the telephone call you might have with a friend to tell them what you have found.
  • Role play questions - You can only ask 3 questions to the octopus. What would you ask?

Now answer these questions in your book:

  • How did the octopus get there? Why is it wearing a hat? Where did the plants come from?
  • You decide to let the octopus stay here, but the next morning you come into your kitchen to find it joined by another creature. What might the other creature be?

Challenge (write in full sentences)

  • What happens next? Write down what you think might happen.
  • Try to persuade the octopus to leave. What will you say?
  • Draw your own octopus and give it a name.

Everyday Materials – Sorting

Now that we have learnt about objects, the materials they are made from and the properties of the materials, we can use what we know about properties to group objects together.

It could be soft/hard, rough/smooth, dull/shiny, transparent/opaque

Look at the following pictures and sort them by deciding if they are waterproof or not.

You could cut and stick them, draw pictures or write words.

Next Tuesday, 16th February is Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day as we often call it.

Read the powerpoint below as a reminder of why and how we celebrate Shrove Tuesday.

It is really easy to make the batter for pancakes, have a go next week:

Mix together in a bowl – 100g plain flour, 1 egg, half pint of milk and a pinch of salt.

Then all you need to do is design and make your toppings.

Draw and describe your ideas. Think of all your favourite treats and then get them on the shopping list ready for next Tuesday.

Can you design 3 different pancake toppings?

Spelling

Sticking with the theme of pancake day, let's have some fun flipping letters. First you will need to choose a spelling from this week's list.

camel                           tinsel

tunnel                           trowel

squirrel                         angel

travel                            barrel

towel                             parcel

Write each letter of your word onto small separate pieces of card. Grab a frying pan (or spatula) and place your letters inside. Flip them out of the pan and onto the floor so that they become muddled up. How quickly can you rearrange the letters to spell your word correctly. Try this with each spelling in turn for some flipping good fun!

RE

Next Wednesday, 17th February is Ash Wednesday.

Read about Ash Wednesday on the powerpoint below.

Ash Wednesday begins ‘Lent’ and represents Jesus going into the desert to fast for 40 days. Click here to watch a clip of the story of Jesus in the desert.

Have a go at the activity below, filling the gaps in the sentences.

THURSDAY

Maths - Make equal groups: Grouping

Click here to watch the next teaching video.

Click here to have a go at the questions.

English

Open up 'The Runaway Pancake' comprehension attached in the files below. Read through the text and answer the questions.Try to write your answers in full sentences in your work book.

Example: 1. Who chased the pancake?  ________  chased the pancake.

Don't forget capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Challenge

For those who would enjoy some extra reading this week read,  'How to Make Pancakes' and answer the questions that follow.

Spelling

Use the Y2 common exception word powerpoint in the files below to recap on all the words we have worked on so far. Can you read them all?

Our next 5 common exception words to read and spell are:

every    great     steak     break     pretty

Today You will need to write each of your words onto a circle of card. Now you have a 'word pancake'. Take  your first 'word pancake' and place it onto a frying pan or spatula. The idea is to spell your word out loud letter by letter. Here's the tricky bit!!! For each letter you say out loud you must flip your word pancake once.

So, e...v....e...r...y = 5 flips

Now try doing this for each word in turn.

Get your grown ups involved, it's not as easy as it looks is it?
