YEAR 4 Multiplication Check

There will be a statutory test for all Year 4 pupils in the UK in 2021 called the Multiplication Check

What is the Multiplication Check?

The check is a series of quick fire times tables questions to tests knowledge of multiplication tables between 2 and 12.

There'll be an emphasis on the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 tables because these are considered to be the most difficult.

These checks will be compulsory for all schools in the UK in 2021.

Who is it for?

Year 4 children.

What happens?

Each pupil has to answer 25 questions and access the questions online using an iPad or PC.

They have 6 seconds to answer each question. An on-screen timer will count down the time available for each question and in between the questions there is a 3 second rest. There'll be multiple versions of the test. The version each pupil gets is selected at random.

When are Kirkby CofE doing it?

We will try and do some ‘try-outs’ so the children can get used to the format.

We will aim to do these in March and May.

The children will then do the actual multiplication check in June.

(The exact date has not been confirmed yet but this was the month when the check would have been done last year before Covid disrupted the school year)

Here are some images of what it will look like for the children:

What can I do to help prepare my child?

All children have preferred ways to learn - just like we do as adults! Your child may like to write out times tables over and over again, or practise questions, or they may learn best by singing, dancing or playing a board game. There are many different ways to practise. We will give children specific homework linked to times tables to help prepare them. Please encourage your children to do this every week and help them with it after they have had a try themselves.

Also, feel free to click the guide below for a range of extra ways you can practise times tables with your child and choose the ones that work best for you.

As a school, we use ‘Time Table Rock Stars’ (TTRS) as an interactive way for children to learn and answer their multiplication/division calculations quickly, as well as regular practice in Maths lessons.

I have given your child their TTRS login, but if you need it again, please let me know.

Please try to support your child in learning their multiplication facts and provide the opportunity for them to play TTRockstars daily if possible. Learning their time tables at home will really benefit them to become fluent in their tables and enable them to access more areas of the maths curriculum.

If your child starts practising now, even if it's just for 5-10 mins a day, then they will feel a lot more confident/know their times tables for Summer 2021. 😁✖️➗

(Also, they will be having FUN as TTRockstars is a GREAT game to play!!)
