Early Reading - Phonics

Helping your child read begins with:
Level 1: listening to stories, your child retelling bits of the story.
- Recognising their own name
- Recognising initial letter, then some letter sounds in their name
- Picking out patterns and details in pictures
- Joining in with language- singing songs, nursery rhymes and playing ‘I spy’ etc.
- Playing snap with words
- Sustaining short levels of concentration 3-5 mins/5-10 mins
Level 2: starting to read
- Read a short simple sentence with two and three letter words – A big red bag
- Retell a short simple story in sequence
- Recognise 5-10 tricky words by sight (e.g. I, no, go, to, the etc.)
- Write their Christian and surname an a few other words
- Build sentences using familiar words
Level 3: becoming a reader
- Read words and sentences containing less common words, as well as sh.ch.th (e.g. Was, you, they)
- Recognise 10-20 common tricky words by sight (e.g. was, you, they)
Remember, every child develop at their own pace. Use the above descriptors above to support your child’s reading journey.
